Overview
This is a series of Videos I have created using Hitfilm geared towards teaching those who are looking into the game and those who have it but are new to it wanting to learn. 1 Covers very basics covered in the INGAME Tutorial, 2 Covers FIRE In depth the ways of making it types of tinder and where to get them as well as planning ahead for your next fire. 3 Covers First Aid in depth from the most basic of bandages to the more advanced using other plants and materials and why you need them, I then demonstrate their use. 4 is coming very soon and that is an extension of First Aid but Unorthodox healing like surviving severe wounds like snake bite without bandages. In 5 I will be covering Worms, Parasites, Insanity and food poisoning essentially the 3rd video on first aid and last one. In later videos I may cover traps setting a trap, and even later long term survival as I have well over 300 days in this game easily with multiple saves lasting several seasons. Some of the more seasoned players may benefit from some of the things I know like shooting birds in mid air with a bow. This guide is a work in Progress with videos being added as they are completed and tutorial 1 being replaced and broken down into segments.
Tutorial 1 Basics.
WELCOME TO EAGLES GREEN HELL TUTORIALS
A VIDEO GUIDE TO SURVIVING THE HELL.
Tutorial Video one is being replaced by 3 videos first is a short covering the backpack and tabs.
2nd the notebook and all its tabs and 3rd will cover the actual gameplay to Survival Basics.
THE BACKPACK.
THE NOTEBOOK
Survival Gameplay Basics
(Will keep you alive the first few days)
You pick up a rock or grab a large stone and harvest it.
To harvest a stone walk up to it and use the drop down menu accessed via a right click and scroll down to harvest this will add 3 small stones to your back pack. Press tab or hold C to access your Back pack and drag and drop the items onto the crafting rock from the left hand menu.
BUT WAIT. You need a stick first because if you only drag over a rock it will not craft anything.
Then you grab a stick drag both the rock and the stick onto the crafting rock you will the small circles above the crafting rock fill with white as an indicator of the right combination of items use the small circles as a guide to know if you have the right materials or enough of that material to craft, and boom you have created the most basic of stone axes, it wont last very long till you get your crafting skill up.
To swing the Axe you will left click the axes can be swung at Bushes trees animals and enemies.
To throw the Axe which is part of your throwing skill covered in the menu in the first part of my video…
To throw it aim hold down your middle mouse button and release it. When you release your axe will be thrown you can pick it back up with E. To throw a spear you do the same thing. You can throw rocks with G. By aiming and holding down G.
To craft a spear you will make FIRST a Stone Knife. Gather two small stones by finding them or harvesting a large rock. Drag both small stones onto the crafting rock this will craft you a stone knife. The stone knife can be used to harvest animals or used or thrown as a weapon and has its own spot in your weapons tab on your back pack drag and drop the stone knife in the farthest right hand slot. This slot is used for your knives. No other weapons can go in this slot. The other 4 are for weapons and torches. You will then use a piece of Liana (Rope) or vines you have gathered off a tree by pressing and holding E.
Use your new stone axe to cut down a smaller diameter sapling It should not be bigger around then your players head. This will net you some small sticks you can use to craft with or a make a fire with and 2 Long sticks. Pull up the crafting rock and drag and drop the long stick from the ground onto the crafting rock, then drag and drop your Stone knife you just made onto the crafting rock as well, now last take a liana from the rope tab by dragging it from your back pack slot to the crafting rock you should now have all circles filled and clicking craft should net you a Spear.
You can stab with it by right clicking or throw it by holding middle mouse and waiting for your cross hairs to close before you let off.
To make a weak spear you dont need anything but the Long stick, just drag and drop the long stick onto the crafting rock and click craft and you will have a weak spear. Both the spear and weak spear take up one slot in your weapons tab slots on your back pack. You can hold up to 4 of the same items or mix and match them as you please.
The main setup should go Axe 2 spears bow. To craft a bow is simple. Drag a long stick onto the crafting rock and then drag a liana from the rope menu onto the crafting rock then click craft. You have just crafted a bow. Congratulations. You are now an Armed Survivor.
To use a bow you will need to have arrows. Arrows can be crafted from a small stick and 2 feathers you can find a dead bird on the ground and use the drop down menu by moving your mouse over his body and clicking harvest, this will net you a small raw piece of meat, and 6 feathers. Drag a small stick and 2 feather yes one at a time over to the craft rock, click craft and you have made an arrow. You now have 1 shot. You can stack up to 5 arrows in your backpack per stack of them.
To get more small sticks find them on the ground or go into your back pack and mouse over the sticks and click harvest 1 stick will give you 3 small sticks. This is handy when it comes to making a fire covered in my next Tutorial. To shoot your arrow press the 1-4 numebers on your keyboard for the cooresponding slot your bow is in. All weapon items are hot keyed and can be easily swap via 1-4 keys on the keyboard. example 1 Axe 2 spear 3 spear, 4 bow. which is how I keep mine. Currently there is no hotkey for the stone knife that I am aware of. Though it could have been added.
To fire your bow equip it. If you dont remember what hotkey go into your backpack and mouse over the item then CAREFULLY SELECT EQUIP be careful not to accidentally click destroy. You can destroy all items INCLUDING your limited edition one time only Metal bidon so be careful.
Once the bow is equipped your arrow will auto equip. When there are no arrows left or you dont have any to start you will see a bow with no arrow. Take aim at a nearby tree about waist level. Now that you have an arrow on your bow, Right click and hold it. Keep holding it. When you pull back to take a shot with your bow it uses fatigue. =ENERGY.
You will see your energy drop and as it does you will let out a gasp and your shot will go back to default loaded position. Now regen your energy, it will regen quickly. Take aim once more in the spot I told you to and as you do let the crosshairs slowly close in. If you let off your right mouse button before the crosshair closes your shot will not hit where you want it to. Let the crosshairs close and when they do you have a few seconds to fire and hit where you were aiming before you gasp for air again and have to pull back on the bow string again to reset. Go and retrieve your arrow now from the tree. I told you to aim waist height at a tree near you so you could learn that you can retrieve your arrows!
Yes everything you shoot an arrow at to kill once you have killed it can have your arrows retrieved from it. Don’t always count on getting that arrow back… Sometimes the animal will run and youll never find it. Retrieving weapons can be tricky especially arrows.
When you walk up to your arrow you will see it highlight and you can press E to return it to your inventory sometimes it will highlight and you’ll move and it wont be highlighted anymore. Same with your spear. Sometimes its easier to mouse over the animal and harvest it gathering its meat and bones First before trying to get your arrows or spear back. You will see with time.
You are now Armed and ready to fight for survival. Please move on to Tutorial 2, Fire.
Tutorial 2 FIRE
FIRE
Now that you have learned the basics of the backpack, notebook and weapons and crafting
I will show you one of the greatest skills to possess in Survival, Fire.
In this video I go in depth about how to make fire in Green hell even when it might be raining.
With the types of firestarters as well as all the tinders and dos and donts.
How you create a fire is quite simple in Green Hell BUT it is a skill, just as in real life.
Therefore the more you do it the more you learn about it and the more proficient you will be in making it successfully.
To start you will need to gather as you go picking up sticks and filling your backpack slots full of 10 sticks and 10 small sticks. Sticks can be harvested for 3 small sticks by right clicking and selecting in the drop down menu harvest. These sticks will be added automatically into your inventory however if you inventory is full any sticks over the max limit of 10 will be dropped with a message in red text.
Collect the sticks both large and small till you have 10 of each, then press C or Tab and go into your notebook selected from the wheel menu with the notebook icon. Go over to your Fire Tab on the right side of the notebook and select the small fire without any stones surrounding it. This will instantly give you the ghost of the fires build in white as you move the ghost will move with you. You will find a suitable location under roof you have built inside a cave MAYBE EVEN IN THE OPEN. Then you will left click to set the ghost in place. When setting the fires ghost like all things placeable in Green hell,You will sometimes have it turn yellow or red this indicates an area not suitable for the fire.
Once you have placed your fires ghost you will approach it until you are given a message to press E.Press E repeatedly to build your fire as you do the sticks will move from your back pack automatically taking their places in the set ghost of the fire. You will fill in small sticks first then actual sticks next. If you suddenly cant place anymore sticks it could be because you dont have enough small sticks to allow for the placement of large sticks or you have run out of sticks. So this is why I say collect 10 of each.
Continued in next Section.
Fire explained (Text & Images)
Due to running out of room for text this will serve as a page 2 illustrated Guide for fire.
Once you have placed your fires ghost you will approach it until you are given a message to press E.Press E repeatedly to build your fire as you do the sticks will move from your back pack automatically taking their places in the set ghost of the fire. You will fill in small sticks first then actual sticks next. If you suddenly cant place anymore sticks it could be because you don’t have enough small sticks to allow for the placement of large sticks or you have run out of sticks. So this is why I say collect 10 of each.
Once you have filled the ghost in with both small sitcks and sticks you will hear a piano key and see your fire lay in full color as one solid model.
Now you must start your fire with an ember.
There are a few ways to produce an ember in Green hell. Namely the hand drill, there are two ways to craft a hand drill. One is to cut down a large diameter tree which will net you two logs.
You then walk over to the log and right click selecting from the dropdown menu Harvest, this will add 7 sticks to your back pack and if your leaf and nut tab of your backpack has enough room a plank.
Drag and drop the plank onto your crafting rock from the wheel menu via C or tab.
Drag both the Plank and a small stick over to the rock and you will see “Craft Hand drill” click craft.
You can also use the more simple method and drag and drop a stick and small stick onto the crafting rock and click craft this will craft a hand drill shown in the right hand side of your bag under your fire tab while the plank version of the hand drill will appear to the left when you build it. Either will work fine. Depending on which is built first the handrill will be to the left of the right on your bag.
Basic Hand Drill using a small stick and a stick.
Hand Drill using the Plank.NOTE: The Tribal Fire Starter[greenhell.gamepedia.com] and the Fire Bow OR Bow Drill will not be part of this it however works the same though uses different materials. The Tribal fire starter MUST BE FOUND and is added in your notebook once found. The Bow Drill is NOT in Survival mode only in Challenges and with simpler methods here is not recommended as the use of your time in the challenges should focus on the easiest items.
As it seems it is no longer even listed in the Green Hell Official Wiki.
ONLY WORKS IN CHALLENGES CANNOT BE CRAFTED IN SURVIVAL MODE.
Crafting Recipe is a Bow,a stone and a small stick. I have been told it will be added back in the official release of the game.
If you dont already have one this will add it to your back pack under your fire tab of your backpack.
Go to this tab and mouse over the board and plank and select “use” this will make Jake drop down into a squatting position over your hearth board “The plank” or Stick
and hold the small hand drill spindle in place, NOW YOU NEED A TINDER.
Without a tinder you can not use the hand drill. If you do not have a tinder press Escape and he will exit his animation.
As I have explained there are several types of tinder you can cut down leaves and wait for them to dry out on the ground or in your backpack which within about 12 hours will net you a small pile titled “Dry Leaves”. Alternatively you can also cut down a banana tree that will net you 2 large brown dead looking leaves hold E to pick them up. They will be added to your backpacks leaf and nut tab. TINDERS IN BAG Dry leaf Left Fiber Right
TINDERS BEING USED Dry leaf Left Fiber Right
You can also harvest from Molineria and some other plants such as unknown herbs ,a fiber. This fiber will be added underneath your hand drill set in your fire tab of your backpack. You can also use a birds nest found on one of the many logs around the amazon which will add to the same area as the fiber but look larger as a nest.
Drag and drop your Tinder rather it be dry leaves or a fiber onto your hearth board while jake is in the animation for using the hand drill. He will immediately start to play the hand drill animation.
This can go two ways… If you have enough enough energy and your hand drill is in good condition you will hear him scream YES YES!! He will cup in his hands the ember and you wil then walk over to your firelay of sticks rather quickly and press E to add the ember to the sticks which will instantly animate a Fire. If you do not have enough energy or your item breaks he will cuss get back up and the items will be added back into your inventory. Here we note there is not enough energy to make a fire…
Sometimes the game can glitch and during him creating the fire the hand drill will break and stay play the full audio clip of him starting the fire even after you have stood back up but youll have no ember and when you check your backpack your hand drill will be gone. (Note sometimes your tinder will disappear during a failed attempt)
If you have success, the fire will have two white unfilled loops next to it and one on top of it Center.
Use the two side spots to drag and drop any raw meat you may have on you onto the fire.
Raw meat and other items that cook will not drop onto the middle circle however… If you have a coconut bowl and it is filled with fluid such as soup or water… It will instantly put the fire out when dragged onto the middle. This can be used to preserve the sticks left in the fire for a later time.
Continue to the next section for a bit on boiling water and cooking. I will not cover cooking in depth in the next section it is only to explain using your fire.
(Fire Explained Continued) Using your fire to survive.
Above your fire will be a small wheel this wheel represents the life of the fire as it fills up you fire will slowly burn out and the sticks will slowly fall inward and lower to the ground.
Fire half way burned through. below VVVV
When you add raw meats or other items to be cooked you will get a small wheel above them as well this is their cook timer you will not be able to move them off the fire till the timer runs out.
Left meat placed on fire and to the Right meat cooking with timer just above. This timer also will appear when drying meats and you cannot remove the meat till its done.
Upon it disappearing from above your food item, your item will change a color to a cooked color which you can then press E to grab off the fire or just drag and drop the item away.
Left Nearly completely done Timer almost full and right meat cooked with stats listed.
If you leave any item on the fire too long it will change color from cooked to a burned black. Burned meat will take from your sanity if eaten however will still give you some benefits. I recommend leaving a piece of burned meat near your fire as an emergency food source since burning it will delay its spoil timer. When you drag and drop a coconut bowl onto the fire you can do so by placing it empty or full dragging a full one from the ground to the circle on your fire via drag and drop.
If its empty you can add fluid to it from a container by dragging the fluid item over the bowl and seeing a pour option. This is how you will boil your water to make it safe for drinking. Once the boil timer has gone you can drink it straight from the fire or pour it via dragging it over a container such as a Bidon or even another coconut bowl.
Doing this with mutliple coconut bowls will allow you to fill up your metal bidon which holds 100 with clean drinkable water. You can fill any bidon with dirty water and then pour the water into coconut bowls to boil it for drinking. Upon water being boiled and made clean you can add things like mushrooms, Bones, and plant stalks to make soups. Just drag and drop the item to the bowl.
These soups currently do not spoil and I recommend keeping 2-4 bone infusions around for emergency energy needed to start a fire. Bone Infusion also treats fever and food poisoning.
As you make more fires your fire starting skills will increase and use less energy.
This concludes the Tutorial section on Fire.
Tutorial 3 First Aid
Tutorial 3 First Aid
Tutorial 3 was originally going to be its own however given that Unorthodox healing and worms and insanity as well as food poisoning are really part of first Aid they will be added to this Tutorial Section.
Basic First aid, Bandages and types of bandages, plants and materials used to create them.
Unorthodox Healing
This is going to cover surviving without a bandage even some of the worst most life threatening problems such as infection and rattlesnake bites.
Worms, Insanity, Food Poisoning and Parasites.
This is going to teach you how worms and leeches can cause you to lose your sanity rapidly causing you to fall victim to it, I show just how fast 2 worms from sleeping on the ground can basically kill you.
I also cover food poisoning how you get it and how to cure it as well Parasites.
Tutorial 4 Navigation
NAVIGATION
This section is going to cover Navigation via the Compass on your watch.
Its a very basic Concept. But I made videos demonstrate using it and STAYING ALIVE.
I show you how I do things and how I dont soley rely on the compass but VISUAL RECOGNITION.
This video was just uploaded 1:00PM central and will need 10 mins beware it is available in higher res than 720p All my videos should be optional for 1080p on youtube.
The first video is going to cover Day Time Navigation the 2nd is going to cover Night Navigation.
If indeed I decide to do one on night Navigation. Since the principles are the same its just darker and you just need to be that much more aware of where you are the heading you are on and watching for Rattlesnakes pacing yourself and moving slower, possibly leaving yourself Ghost structures to mark a camp to sleep JUST IN CASE you have made it half way and things go south or you need to save mid way.
Day navigation is easy, but when night falls if you are out wandering the jungle and you are not familiar you can find yourself dead before dawn. Mistakes you make can cost you your life.
So I give some tips I use and explain how to stay alive if you’re lost. When you first start you are very lost. But you slowly gain your bearings, however when night falls 10 feet in any direction will find you lost all over again and going off your path leading you far away from your destination.
Coming soon.
Tutorial 5 Hunting Basics
Ill cover some of the simple aspects of Hunting. In this video I teach you how you can use all weapon types to hunt. Rocks,Spears,Axes, and the Bow. I teach how to make each item and use it.
I give you some hunting pointers and explain how to take animals down.
Hunting is pretty straight forward but you may not be aware of some of these things and how to use them so I teach it anyway. WATCH VIDEO for pointers not mentioned in Text.
ROCKS
If you find a rock you can use it as a weapon. Press and hold G. Wait for the Crosshairs to close then let go. Unlike other weapons the rock is dependent on coming out of your backpack Leaf and nut tab and the amount you currently have on you by Pressing G instead of Middle mouse like with others.
It may be somewhat difficult to find a rock look near water and along paths, They are used for a number of items in Crafting. They make better crafting materials than they do weapons.
You can get rocks from a large stone just use the Drop down menu with your mouse and select harvest this will give you 3 rocks if you already have one it will say 4 but that is the number of the total you have. Hitting G 4 times will throw all four of your rocks.
You can use rocks to kill a Rattlesnake or small animal Rattlesnakes take two hits. No matter what level your throwing skill is. Rocks are governed by the throwing skill however it doesnt seem to have any effect on the damage they deal though it will increase your throwing skill using them to kill small game.
I DONT RECOMMEND THIS. If you have one rock find another and craft a stone blade. Throw that instead. Move the stone blade to the far right slot its specifically there for your blades.
Throwing the Stone Knife once will kill a snake and not risk your life from trying to find the first rock thrown. To throw it again or waisting time and energy to throw another rock. Just make sure that when you go to harvest the snake you have gathered the knife you threw or have another knife on you or you wont be able to skin it.
Rocks are a very poor option for a weapon. They should be used in crafting and maybe getting down coconuts from a tree, but for this I recommend using a weak spear or any spear or axe really.
AXES Depending on the type of axe you make it can be thrown as a weapon. Its one of my favorite weapons and will get your throwing skill up quickly its great for gathering coconuts by aiming and throwing it with middle mouse after the cross hairs close at coconuts to get them down.
The most simple to make is the Stone axe. Simply find a stick. (Not the small stick) and a stone.
Open your backpack via C or tab and open the crafting rock, drag and drop the stick and one rock onto the crafting rock then click craft. This will make the stone axe. In real life its called a Kelt and takes hours to make by using a hot coal to burn a hole in the center of a sturdy strong stick. Then inserting a Stone that is large and has been slowly rubbed down to a very blunt edge. Then knocked into the hole in the stick and secured with Vines or cordage of some type like the whipped bark from a tulip poplar.
SPEARS
Five different spears can be crafted and one found off natives, One being the weak spear which (upon crafting and being added to your back pack) slot “You put it there” will add the spike trap Blue print to your notebook. Then there is the bamboo spear crafted the same way using bamboo instead of would requiring no other materials. Then the stone spear which will require a stone knife one liana and a longstick, These 3 are the easiest to make. The fourth youll need to kill to get a bone. The Bone Spear is made with a bone, longstick and liana. The Fifth is the metal spear made later after you learn forging , last is the Native spear taken from dead Natives.
To craft the weak spear use an axe or knife to cut down a long skinny tree that will net 2 long sticks. Stand near the long stick Hold C or Tab and open your your crafting rock, Drag and drop from the ground the long stick onto the crafting rock and click craft. This will say Weak spear. The Weak spear does less damage and isnt quite as effective as the others without a head shot.
Craft the bamboo spear by cutting down the smaller bamboo plant which will net you 4-5 long sticks or bamboo and a few short bamboo sticks. Drag and drop from the ground the long stick onto the crafting rock and click craft. This will craft a bamboo spear. It needs no further materials and is one of the easiest and most effective spears for throwing to hunt or fight. Especially with head shots.
The 3rd Option is the Stone Spear. The stone spear is better than the weak spear and requires more materials. Gather two stones and open your crafting rock and drag and drop the stones onto the rock click craft and you’ll have a stone knife crafted. Gather liana(Rope) off a large tree holding E. It will add it to your rope menu. Once you have the stone knife and one liana drag the long stick onto your crafting rock along with the Stone knife from your backpacks leaf and nut tab and the rope tab. Click Craft and this will add the the stone spear Directly to your 1-4 slot on your backpacks weapon tab.
The 4th is the Bone Spear. use an axe or knife to cut down a long skinny tree that will net 2 long sticks. Stand near the long stick Hold C or Tab and open your your crafting rock, Drag and drop from the ground the long stick onto the crafting rock along with a bone from an animal or perhaps a native maybe even one you found on a dead animal carcass you can hear flies buzzing and youll know its there there will be a bone and maggots on dead carcasses.Click Craft and this will add the the Bone spear Directly to your 1-4 slot on your backpacks weapon tab.
The 5th and Arguably most strongest and deadly is the Metal spear crafted from a metal blade
a long stick and liana. Must be forged ( Seek out a guide of metal Forging)
Last is the [b]Native spear. The best in my opinion for throwing not so much for fighting, its point makes it for an easily accurately thrown spear that will almost always kill whatever you hit in a short amount of time if not immediately. Head shots are pretty much a guarantee kill but not always.
ALL SPEARS CAN BY THROWN BY HOLDING MIDDLE MOUSE WAITING FOR THE CROSS HAIRS TO CLOSE AND LETTING OFF. Stab with left click. Block with R. My number one advice when it comes to green hell. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS HAVE A SPEAR. ALWAYS. Never throw the last one you have unless its the last man and you know you’ll hit him.
DO NOT EVER THROW YOUR LAST SPEAR IN A FIGHT WITH A PUMA OR JAGUAR. STAB REPEATEDLY INSTEAD. They are tanks.
The Bow
There are 3 different types of bows, 2 can be Crafted. One is found only on Native bodies. You have the Wood bow which is crafted from a long stick a liana via the Crafting rock from your wheel menu and the Bamboo Bow which is crafted from a bamboo long stick and one liana. Both bows when first crafted have 20% Durability. To fire the bow you need to make an Arrow. Just drag a small stick and two feathers onto the crafting rock. Once you have arrows you can just equip the bow via your bags weapon tab and mousing over the weapon CAREFULLY using the drop down menu to select equip. To fire Aim at the middle of a tree about chest height and hold left mouse wait for the cross hairs to close and let off. If you hold too long you will run out of stamina. As you progress in Bow skill the damage you do with the bow will increase as well as the length of time you can hold a shot. Aim just above what you want to hit.
When you first start pay attention to the condition of your weapon. If its 20 you’ll get a few uses before it breaks. You can avoid this by crafting multiple of the item and getting up the durability.
Fishing
Fishing with the Fishing Rod.
To fish using the Fishing rod you must first find the fishing rod. Its available on Anaconda Island next a tree (youll see it dont worry.) Once this rod is placed into a weapon slot in your backpack it will add the blueprint or Schematic for you to build it by hand. The Materials to make it are as follows. One Long Stick, 2 Feathers, a Brazil nut shell half, One Liana.
Apologies on the last portion a clip must have copied while I was working on it.
I was pulled away from this project several times didnt see it till it was uploaded. Sorry.
Once you have the pole you will then need to make a hook. Hooks can be made in two ways.
You can make a Bone hook by mousing over a bone in your back pack and clicking harvest via the drop menu on the bone. This will give you a Bone Shard, place the Bone Shard onto the crafting rock to craft a Bone Hook. The next way is to use a fish bone.
You don’t need a fish bone though, a normal bone from a harvested animal or picked up from a carcass or dead native will work just as well all you need to do is harvest the bone then craft a hook from the shard. Craft a fish bone into a hook by dragging the fish hook onto the crafting rock and clicking craft.
Once you have crafted your hook equip the fishing rod then open your leaf and nut tab and drag and drop the Hook onto the lower part of your fishing rod where you’ll see a little white circle appear. Once the hook is on drag and drop a bait over the hook while its on the fishing rod.
BAITS.
Baits are as follows, Grub worms, Larva, Maggots,Angel fish,Discus fish, Orange Cup Mushrooms.
Each fish may vary on the bait you’ll use to catch them. Maggots are an all around bait for catching most fish ,while some will not bite on them. Larva and Grub worms look slightly different from each other but work the same however may not catch other smaller fish or Arrowana. Angel and Discus must be caught and added to your meat tab before they can be placed on your rod as bait. Both the Angel and Discus are Bait fish for the larger fish.
FISH
In Green Hell from Largest to Smallest we have the Arrowana,Bass,Pirahna,Discus and Angel fish.
LOCATIONS
Each fish type will vary by location. Most fish are found around Anaconda Island, Haven, and the little Oasis. Haven is by a large water fall Down the river from Abandoned Village.
The Discus and Angel fish are Generally found together but not always. In Anaconda Island Area they have their own fishing holes and spawn separately around the shores of Anaconda Islands outer shores. They can be found in rivers swimming together.
When you catch a fish minus the Angel and Discus which can be eaten whole, you’ll have the option to harvest the body. Often your back pack will be full and the fish will drop to the ground after you’ve caught it and pressed E to add it to your inventory. Just use the drop down menu and select harvest this will harvest the body into fillets and add them to the meats tab as well as 3 fish bones per fish to your leaf and nut tab in your back pack( provided there is space.)
SPEAR FISHING
Spearing large fish is easy using a normal spear however spearing smaller fish is a tedious task.
The Skill Spear Fishing is Governed using the actual fishing spear which is crafted using a long stick OR long bamboo stick, and two small sticks as well as one liana. Once crafted you can throw this item BUT throwing it will not get you any skill points on your spear fishing.
To fish using the Fishing Spear you will have to wade into the water with the fish BEWARE OF STINGRAYS. They have a Venom sting and will need a Tobacco bandage to cure don’t get stung!
Once in the water about chest height you will wait with spear in hand, too deep in the water and you’ll begin to swim. You need to be standing in the water not swimming. Chest height is good.
Have your Fishing Spear equipped then left mouse button clicked and held this will draw back your spear and you can look around will holding it back wait for a fish to get close almost in front of you and dont move too much. When they are in front of you and you have the shot release the mouse button and you’ll Spear a fish! You’ll know you have speared one when the spear comes out of the water with the fish flopping on the end of it prompting you to press E to add to your back pack. If the body is too large and your backpack is full the fish will drop to the bottom of the water and you’ll have to pick it back up when your bag isn’t full to get its body. When you have speared a fish using this method you will get 1 skill point on your Spear Fishing.
When using a normal spear just hold down middle mouse let the cross hairs close and throw the spear into the fish then collect your spear from the floating fish and the fishes body quickly.
BOW FISHING.
Bow fishing is part of the Bow Skill. Fishing by shooting the fish with a bow is easy and probably one of the easiest ways to catch fish. However it can be a very daunting task when shooting at smaller fish and in Caiman waters. After you shoot a fish with an arrow it will float to the top of the water and you can gather both the arrow and the body.
Before you swim into water to gather a body make sure you have the room in your backpack and SCOUT FOR CAIMAN. Use wood arrows they’re easy to replace and you can afford to miss. Make lots to practice. Don’t assume you’ll be able to find those shot arrows.
FISH TRAPS (Covered in Traps.)
Fish Traps are a valuable asset. Unlike fishing with the rod, Traps will spawn your catch so you can place traps even if don’t see any fish almost anywhere there’s water bait and wait. You DO NOT have to bait any traps to catch anything currently as of Pre 1.0 release. Maybe after story 1.0.
Cooking your catch Fish cook faster than meats so stay close to camp while cooking them. They cook about the same speed as smaller meats. You can add the raw fillet to a coconut bowl of boiled water to make fish soup. Or eat the cooked fillet. You can eat cooked Angel and Discus whole, fish will you with provide proteins and energy. NOT fats.
Though an easy catch you must supplement your dinner diet with other foods for fats and carbs.
Dont eat fish raw even though the Angel fish and Discus fish can be eaten whole, Don’t do it. Cook it first. Fish can also be smoked and preserved for longer lasting food supply.
Traps
Sure you can pick out a trap and build it but do you know how to catch what you want?
Do you know how to use your traps efficiently without wasting materials and catching nothing?
I will show you each trap and how it is used and what animal it will catch as well as where to place them.
Traps in this game currently are just an added way of gathering food without much work at the time. However in honest opinion they are more trouble than they are worth unless you set them up right, in the right locations and efficiently use them. It does no good to set 10 killer traps if only 4 catch and you only check them every few days. Ill help you Trap Efficiently in these videos.
The Stone Trap
The Stone trap is the simplest of the traps starting already in your Notebook the hardest part is finding a large stone. (Not Hard) Requires only a large stone some small sticks and liana.
You dont even have to bait the trap and within minutes you have Frogs,Mice,Spiders,or a Caiman Lizard. When you first start setting out four of these in areas you know these animals roam then carrying on with other tasks to check them only moments later will see that you Do Not Starve.
The Snare Trap
This trap is highly effective when placed in the right location such as an Armadillo spawn it will supply you with both meat and Armor. Within minutes youll have nearly a full set if not a full set of shells to cover all your limbs. You can also set this trap up to catch larger game like Tapir. Leave the area come back and you will have a catch if its in the right spot 80-90% of the time.

The Killer Trap (The Beast)
This Trap will have knee deep in a supply of meat in no time. Set in an area where there are capybara or Pecarry and no mice to pre trip your trap this trap will slay bodies within just minutes youll have meat for the fire, the smoker and the dryer keeping you well fed. Proper placement of this trap is pertinent to its function. Placing it in an area where there is no spawns of game will net you a good loss of materials fast. It will almost never catch a thing if not set right.
Combat
When the natives come and its time to fight, do you know how to survive?
Sometimes one is all it takes to kill you. After watching this instead of being snuck up on, you might be sneaking up on them. The art of winning is strike first, hard, fast, and again Efficiently. Firing an arrow first or throwing a spear and then 10 more arrows after that followed by another spear and your axe then fist fighting to the death or running for your life is NOT what I mean. I will show you how I do things and you might be able to learn to stay alive a little longer using some tips.
I am not the greatest player of all in this game but I have played it long enough to make the hunters become the hunted and I rarely have to use more than is necessary to end a fight if ever the fight starts. No matter what I show you, it will ultimately be up to you and your playing. This is how I do things.
All I am trying to do is help other players who struggle and want to achieve maximum amount of time without death of their Character. No matter what I show you sometimes the odds will be stacked against you. Combat in my opinion starts in this game from the time you wake by caring for your needs, all the right weapons and motions will not do any good if you still die because you didn’t take care of yourself before the fight came. Which is why I layered these tutorials with this being one of the last. If you aren’t up to par on caring for yourself when the enemy isn’t attacking, you wont live long enough to worry about being attacked.
