Free beginning Internet computer classes offered in Tuolumne County

(Sonora, CA) California Connects is offering free Internet computer classes for anyone not yet online. California Connects is a grant funded program designed to increase digital literacy in underserved populations, including low income and Spanish speaking adults.

The California Connects training will be offered in Tuolumne County through July 2013 in partnership with Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency (A-TCAA) and Throckmorten Enterprises. Current training sites include A-TCAA in Sonora and Throckmorten in Big Oak Flat.

Classes are comprised of four, two-hour sessions and are designed for the first-time or novice computer user. The classes will cover where to find free public access computers and Internet service, how to use the Internet and what the Internet has to offer. By the end of the course students will be using email and exploring what the Internet has to offer to enrich their lives. Anyone interested in this basic training is encouraged to sign up now.

In April classes will be held at ATCAA on Monday and Wednesday from 9AM to 11AM and from 6PM to 8PM and on Tuesday and Thursday and Thursday from 2PM to 4PM. ATCAA is located at 527 North Highway 49, Sonora, CA.

Classes are taught by Bob Ingalls of California Connects. Ingalls has a background in the corporate information technology field and has a CompTIA A+ Computer Certificate. The instructor’s goal is to make the classes enjoyable and informative.

Shelter and Housing Resource Services:
ATCAA’s Housing Resources programs in two counties include homeless shelters, rapid re-housing services for homeless persons, transitional living programs for families, rental assistance to forestall evictions, landlord-tenant counseling to resolve disputes, housing counseling for credit and debt repair, financial literacy classes for adults (ATCAA $mart Money), and foreclosure intervention and loan modification counseling for homeowners in Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties.

ATCAA operates emergency homeless shelters in Jackson and Sonora and transitional living facilities in Tuolumne and Columbia, and provides leadership in the Central Sierra Continuum of Care for homeless services and housing.

Position Definition:
As a part of the A-TCAA team, the Shelter Assistant plays an essential role in ATCAA as a whole. Under general supervision of the Shelter Coordinator, the Shelter Assistant has the responsibility for assisting the Shelter Coordinator in all aspects of daily operations at ATCAA’s Family Shelters.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Meet all federal/state licensing requirements and/or program requirements: possess a continually valid California drivers’ license, an acceptable driving record, fingerprint clearance, and TB test;
• The job requires a lot of standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting.

Experience:
• General office practices and routine office machines;
• Good organizational skills.

Ability to:
• Maintain confidential information;
• Work quietly in an office environment;
• Follow detailed instructions;
• Work day and/or evening hours;
• Lift 30 pounds.
